V.S. Algora - Sculpture, Figura de Biscuit "Carlos III Cazador" - 37 cm - Biscuit - 1970
Charles III the Hunter (1716-1788) made in Biscuit, by Vicente S. Algora.
This piece is inspired by Goya's work "Carlos III the Hunter" painted in 1786, from the collection called "Men of Spanish Painting" created by Algora in 1970.
The historical figure is King Charles III (1716-1788), a loyal lover of hunting; he believed that this physical activity would save him from the madness into which both his father PHILIP V and his older brother FERNANDO VI had fallen.
He had an honorable reign, which is reflected both in Goya's work and in Algora's representation. His face, full of kindness and intelligence, is the central element of the composition; it is a metaphor for the stability of the government and the durability of the monarchy. The dog sleeping at the king's feet symbolizes the peace and loyalty of the people under the nearly 30-year reign of Charles III.
