William Morris (Walthamstow, 24 March 1834 – London, 3 October 1896) was a British artist and writer.
Strawberry Thief is one of William Morris's most recognisable designs and, in our opinion, the most iconic piece of Arts and Crafts art. He originally created the tapestry after observing birds stealing strawberries from the garden of his Gloucestershire home, Kelmscott Manor.
Morris was one of the main founders of the Arts and Crafts movement; he is considered a forerunner of modern designers and had a notable influence on the architecture and architects of his time.
He is considered by many to be the father of the Modern Movement, although he was not an architect himself.
He founded a design studio in collaboration with the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti which profoundly influenced the decoration of churches and houses in the twentieth century.
He also made an important contribution to the revival of traditional textile arts and related production methods.
