Large Daunian Messapian ceramic dating from the geometric period
Askos in ancient Greek ceramic.
Duck-shaped vase, globular belly topped with a small arching handle, wide spout. At the back, a small pointed tail painted brown.
Ornamented with a geometric decoration of parallel lines, circles, and waves.
Greek Daunian / Messapian art - 6th century B.C.
Dimensions: height 22.1 cm, length 20.4 cm. Very big!

Previously: Former Swiss private collection, vase acquired before 1977
Askos is the name given in modern terminology to a type of ceramic vase from ancient Greece used to pour small amounts of liquids such as oil. It is recognizable by its flat shape and its spout at one or both ends, which could also serve as a handle.
These vases were generally painted decoratively like vases and were primarily used to store oil and fill oil lamps. They were widely traded in the Mediterranean and its surroundings.
This vase comes from the Apulia region in southern Italy, where ancient Daunia was located, which coincides with the modern provinces of Foggia and Messapia, in the southern part of the region.
