Mask - Chokwe - Angola
Mask - wood - chokwe - Angola
The Tshkwé or Tchokwé ethnic group lives in Angola and the People's Republic of Congo. Their objects are decorated with geometric patterns characteristic of the ethnic group.
Tshokwé masks are worn either for initiation rites, or for the exercise of political and judicial power, or during rites linked to fertility.
The statues often represent their Luba ancestors. The Tshokwé masks, made by sculptor artisans, are made of wood; they are often adorned and are recognizable by a front scarification in the shape of a cross.
They are often used by initiation societies. The future initiates (tundanji), that is to say boys between 8 and 12 years old who have just been circumcised, stay for a few months in a bush initiation camp to receive instruction.
