Albertus J. Temming (1942) - Hollands schaats tafereel
Albertus Temming (1942) is one of the most important living representatives of the old, Dutch school of winter painters. All the classic components are present in his works: windmills, koek-en-zopie tents with a cheerfully waving Dutch flag in top, frozen barges, pollard willows, skaters and chatting people on the ice.
His winter paintings look a little friendlier than the works of his illustrious predecessors. They look lighter, are more colorful and Temming also shows us skaters that you see from the front. That was different with his 19th century predecessors. Here we see the often lonely skaters from the back.
If you look closely, you will see that the faces in Albertus Temming's paintings have not been worked out. So you don't see individuals. As with the 19th century painters, the skaters in Temming also remain anonymous figures.
Passers-by.
Temming, who lived opposite the Amelisweerd estate in Utrecht for a long time, must have watched with sadness the damage to the beautiful landscape caused by the road widening of the A27. Was painting the peaceful Kromme Rijn landscapes a nostalgic flight into the past for him?
Anyway, Temming has been painting since his childhood. After training at the Artibus Art Academy in Utrecht, he specialized in painting realistic landscapes, cityscapes and occasionally portraits.
