This is a very rare Gyoran Kannon 魚籃観音 statue made around the Early Showa period.
This statue depicts a Kannon statue sitting on a fish.
Gyoran Kannon is said to grant blessings such as safe fishing, bountiful catches, prosperous business, family health and happiness, and safety at sea.
This Kannon statue is especially recommended for business people and those involved in the fishing industry.
Gyoran Kannon 魚籃観音 is one of the 33 Kannon Bodhisattvas 三十三観音. It is one of the Kannon that originated in China.
During the Tang Dynasty in China, there was a beautiful woman who dealt with fish, and she searched for someone who could recite the Kannon Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Lotus Sutra, and happily married the one who recited these three sutras, but she died soon after. This woman was said to be a Kannon who appeared to spread the Lotus Sutra, and since then, she has been worshiped as Barofu Kannon (Gyoran Kannon). It is said that if you pray to this Kannon, you will be able to remove the harm of rakshasas, poisonous dragons, and evil spirits, and she has been deeply worshiped in Japan since the Middle Ages.
