- Designed at the beginning of the Second World War, the Crusader was one of the most important British tanks, reaching a production of over 5,000 examples. Equipped with Christie suspension with large diameter wheels, the Crusader had notable qualities of running on rough terrain. The first versions Mk. I and Mk. II were armed with a 2 pdr gun, later replaced by the more powerful 6 pdr gun in the Mk.III version. Lacking adequate armour against enemy fire, it was also very vulnerable to mines and enemy anti-tank guns, and its armament was often inadequate in the face of similar German vehicles. However, when used in a coordinated manner, they managed to obtain good results. The Crusader Mk. II, with the arrival of the more powerful Mk. III, were relegated to second-line roles by the time of the Battle of El Alamein.
- The only theatre of operations in which the Crusader took part was North Africa. At the beginning of 1941, British forces in North Africa had only a small number of obsolete light tanks and cruisers to oppose the more capable Panzer IIIs and Panzer IVs of the two divisions of the Afrika Korps.
In such a desperate situation, Churchill ordered a convoy of new tanks to be transported immediately to Egypt to make up for this deficiency. The order came to life in Operation "Tiger", a convoy of 238 tanks that landed in Alexandria, Egypt on 12 May 1941, among these tanks were 52 new Crusader I that went on to equip the entire 6th Royal Tank Regiment of the 7th Armoured Division.
- In 1940, with the world conflict already underway, the United States General Staff announced a competition for the construction of a lightweight four-wheel drive vehicle that could be used for a variety of purposes. The American Bantam Company, Willys Overland Motor and Ford Motor Co. participated in the competition. The choice fell on the Willys model, which, after a pre-series of 1,500 vehicles starting in 1941, was put on the assembly lines and produced in 640,000 units, of which 277,000 under license from Ford. This meant that the “Jeep” was the vehicle built in the greatest number by the war industry during the Second World War.
In the USA and Great Britain a quick study was carried out to prepare a special vehicle for airborne troops to be used behind enemy lines. The MB Willys Jeep was chosen and, suitably modified, was used in support of the infantry and especially for rapid raids inside enemy lines. Its crew generally consisted of a sergeant and a soldier. It was armed with no less than five machine guns.
- The Special Air Service is a special force of the British Army. It was created in 1941 in North Africa to carry out raids against Axis lines, and currently carries out anti-terrorism and hostage rescue functions, as well as special military operations and long-range reconnaissance.
The history of British special forces begins in 1941 in North Africa, on the initiative of a young lieutenant of the Scots Guards, David Stirling, who managed to convince the British military hierarchy of the potential of small elite units, capable of operating behind enemy lines using unorthodox methods, in order to achieve objectives of significant strategic importance, with limited material and human costs.
In 1944 the various SAS regiments, belonging to various nationalities but under British command and organisation, were merged into the SAS Brigade. The 1st and 2nd Regiments, with almost all British personnel, were joined by the 3rd and 4th French regiments, which also intervened during the Battle of the Bulge[2] and the 5th Belgian regiment. The foreign units were transferred to their respective national armed forces at the end of the war.
