Our Samarkand carpets take their name from a traditional trading center in the Orient - the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Samarkand carpets were manufactured in the late 19th century by the renowned Swiss trading family Ziegler. Due to the political unrest of the Persian Empire and the strong demand for carpets from the West, Ziegler decided to set up its own production in Sultanabad, Pakistan, and employ some of the best carpet weavers to meet this growing demand. Samarkand carpets are finely hand-knotted with approx. 350,000 knots / m2 and promise very high quality.
Today, Samarkand carpets are synonymous with exceptional quality and modern, oriental-inspired patterns. The carpets draw their inspiration from the classic Persian carpet design. The wool used is of high quality and the color palette, consisting of natural plant dyes, is softer and more subtle than that of Persian carpets. The shorter pile makes it easy to keep the carpet clean.
