The mineral uvarovite is a rare island silicate from the garnet group with the end-member composition Ca3Cr2[SiO4]3.
Uvarovite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and usually develops small, well to perfectly formed crystals, but also granular aggregates. Due to mixed crystal formation and foreign impurities, the color varies from dark to emerald to brown-green. Depending on the purity, crystal defects and/or the amount of inclusions, the crystals can be glassy to shiny and transparent to opaque.
During his stay in St. Petersburg, the Swiss-Russian chemist and mineralogist Germain Henri Hess examined a "Dioptase from Bissersk" from the local collection, which he had requested for comparison purposes. The occurrence of a copper mineral on a chrome ore prompted him to conduct a more detailed investigation, during which the supposed dioptase turned out to be a new, chrome-containing garnet. He named the new mineral from the Biserskoje (Biser) deposit in the Middle Urals Uvarovite after the Russian count, mineral collector and president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences Sergei Semyonovich Uvarov.
The crystal structure was clarified by Georg Menzer in 1929 and the first synthesis of pure uvarovite was achieved by F. A. Hummel in 1950 at the Pennsylvania State University.
