Victor Duruy - Histoire des Romains depuis les temps les plus reculés jusqu'à l'invasion des barbares - 1879-1885
A fine copy of the monumental 7-volume octavo edition of the History of the Romans, the best work by the historian Victor Duruy (1811-1894), Member of the Institute, former Minister of Public Education.
This new edition is illustrated with 2,500 engravings drawn from antiquity (including beautiful chromolithographs outside the text) and 100 maps or plans.
Binding by Charles Magnier, signed at the bottom of the spines. Beautiful bindings executed in half-shagreen with corners, ribbed spines decorated with rich compartmentalized gilt ironwork, double gilt fillets on the leather edges of the covers, gilt head.
Bindings in very good condition. Slight rubbing from use on the headcaps and joints. Some corners are slightly pierced. Interiors with scattered foxing. A fine copy.
A monumental work spanning the period from 1879 to 1885. Obviously, we should not expect the latest information on Roman history and civilization from this 19th-century work. But the logic and didactic nature of this monument of scholarship can still be of great help to us, provided that we take, as is customary with this type of work, the usual precautions in terms of methodology and cross-referencing of sources.
