Helmut Newton - Helmut Newton - SUMO XL - Coffret - 2019

Helmut Newton's Sumo is now out of print
Attention, the book weighs 6KG!

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) always showed a profound disdain for the easy or predictable. It is therefore not surprising that SUMO was an irresistible project. The idea of a book the size of a private exhibition, with spectacular images reproduced to the original and state-of-the-art printing standards, was born from an open and experimental dialogue between photographer and publisher. With SUMO weighing 35.4 kg - shrink-wrapped - Newton created a landmark book that surpassed all previous attempts, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical specifications.

Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, SUMO sold out shortly after publication and quickly multiplied in value. It is now part of numerous collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The legendary number one copy, signed by more than 100 book celebrities, broke the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century, selling at auction in Berlin on April 6, 2000 for 620,000 German marks, or approximately €317,000.

Now, this XL edition celebrates 20 years of SUMO, the fruit of a project conceived by Helmut Newton a few years ago. Edited by his wife June, the volume brings together 464 images and a new brochure that takes us through the making of this editorial adventure - a spectacular tribute to Helmut Newton, larger than life, now in a user-friendly format.
