'The Three Worthies Pledging Their Loyalty in the Peach Orchard' 三傑桃園結義図 - 1866 - Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

TRIPTYCH

Yoshitoshi is widely recognized as the last great master of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock printing and painting. He is also considered one of the greatest innovators of the form. His career spanned two eras: the final years of Edo period Japan and the early years of modern Japan after the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in what was new in the rest of the world, but over time he became increasingly concerned about the loss of many aspects of traditional Japanese culture, including traditional woodblock printing.

By the end of his career, Yoshitoshi was struggling almost single-handedly against time and technology. While he was working in the old ways, Japan was embracing Western methods of mass reproduction such as photography and lithography. Nevertheless, in a Japan that was turning away from its own past, he almost single-handedly succeeded in pushing traditional Japanese woodblock printing to a new level, before it effectively died with him.
