Cleto Munari was born in Gorizia on July 19, 1930, but is a Vicenza native by adoption. A major figure in the world of international creativity, in the period between the twentieth century and the third millennium, currently, at 94 years old, Munari is considered one of the most illustrious and recognized leaders of the avant-garde, still in full design ferment, far from the dictates of fashion.
His history as a designer began in the 70s when, from the encounters with some important figures in the world of architecture, his great passion for art and design was born. The decade from 1970 to 1980 was for Munari a period of great innovation and stylistic research.
Among the countless collaborations undertaken, a key role is played by the master Carlo Scarpa 1973 and his friend the architect Ettore Sottsass, who inspired him and left him a taste for beauty. A taste that has become continuous research in these 40 years, with a sort of cadenced renewal at every meeting, not least the one linked to the Nobel Prize winners and great exponents of literature with whom he worked, such as Mark Strand, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Dario Fo.
In 1982 he created the first collection of "Argenti Cleto Munari", designed by Gae Aulenti, Mario Bellini, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Hans Hollein, Alessandro Mendini, which were exhibited in the most important Museums and Galleries of contemporary art in the world. Many of these objects became part of the permanent collections as happened at the Metropolitan of Art and the Moma in New York.
Carlo Scarpa's cutlery was one of the first objects in the Cleto Munari Silver Collection. It took about 6 years to design and perhaps for this reason it remains one of the objects the Venetian designer is most fond of.
In 1985 Cleto Munari presented the first collection of "Jewels", about 250 precious pieces designed by architects from all over the world that for 2 years will be exhibited, in a traveling exhibition, in the museums of the USA and Canada. Considered by many experts the most important collection of jewels of the 80s, it is the object of great attention by collectors; many examples are in museums around the world.
In 1987 the "Orologi Cleto Munari" collection was born: made in very few examples in gold and diamonds and signed by 4 architects: Ettore Sottsass for Italy, Hans Hollein for Europe, Michael Graves for the United States and Arata Isozaki for Japan. The collection of 4 watches is part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan in New York.
The first series of "Vetri di Murano" collections dates back to the 1990s, in which the artists experimented with new glass projects. This gave rise to the series "Micro Macro", "Chromatic Transparencies", "Corolle d'Autore", "Il Veronese", the latter always considered one of the most representative of Venetian glass art, vases designed by Richard Meier, Massimiliano Fuksas, Alessandro Mendini, Matteo Thun, Cleto Munari, Mimmo Paladino, Paolo Portoghesi, made in only 49 examples.
The "Penne Cleto Munari" collection dates back to 2004: 5 pens created by 5 designers, twinned and signed by five Nobel Prize winners in Literature.
The collection "The Magnificent 7" dates back to 2008. It is made up of seven tables in which, for the first time, alongside architects, designers and artists such as Mimmo Paladino, we find exponents of literature: Mark Strand, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Dario Fo, winner of the Nobel Prize, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet and writer.
The "Arredo" collection dates back to 2009, designed by artists such as Alessandro Mendini, Mimmo Paladino, Luigi Mainolfi, Sandro Chia, and designers such as Marcello Morandini, Mark Lee and Cleto Munari himself.
The "Palafitte" table by Cleto Munari pays homage to Venice that lives and rests on stilts, it was presented as a symbolic object of the Veneto Region at the 2012 Venice Biennale. Online art courses
The "Art Carpets" collection dates back to 2012, with about 30 carpet models made entirely by hand in Turkey in accordance with the most ancient manufacturing traditions, and the first prototypes of leather objects were created in 2013. In 2016, the latest precious collection of "Jewels of the new millennium".
2016 finally turns out to be a year of great creative explosion for Cleto Munari who returns to the world of jewelry. There are about 100 new jewels, some designed years ago and others very recent that use the new production technologies made available to us today for an increasingly broader creative horizon. It can even be said that this latest collection also arises from the fact that, after fifty years of intense work, the artistic figure of Cleto Munari has now finally been recognized by the general public no longer only as a provocateur and promoter of new ideas, but also as a real artistic - cultural presence of contemporary Italian art in the world
At the end of 2016, Cleto Munari was named Honorary Olympic Academician and in March 2017, the personal exhibition "Mondo Cleto" was inaugurated at the Civic Museums of Vicenza.
In 2018 he held two international exhibitions, the first in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai and the second in Korea in the cities of Busan, Daegu and Seoul.
In 2020, the project of the gold and diamond brooch by Mimmo Paladino for the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri comes to life. In the second half of 2021, the first marble tables of the new collection "Cleto Munari: Essenza del Marmo" are created, artist tables in marble which is completed with 18 tables designed by great designers in the world.
His creative exuberance then continues with the latest contemporary expressions harmonized with the artisan soul, the poetic "Locletoys", hand-painted vase sculptures with a limited edition lid and the very original glasses, a collection of 13 models of sunglasses and eyeglasses, the latest ingenious scratch of the artist, who has once again extended his experimentation into a particular sector, that of accessories.
