Bouddha 85 cm - 18th c. - Statue - Myanmar/Burma
Buddha
Early 18th century
Nyaung Yan period
Burma
This large wooden sculpture, with traces of red lacquer and traces of gold, is an impressive work from the early 18th century. Measuring 85 cm in height and weighing 17 kg, it has an imposing presence and is a testament to the skill of the craftsmen of the time. The sculpture shows the Buddha in the iconic posture of "Buddha calling the Earth to witness", a major symbolic gesture where the Buddha touches the earth with his right hand, calling the Earth to bear witness to his truth and awakening. This position is often associated with the Buddha's enlightenment and represents a key moment in Buddhist iconography. The wood used is teak. The statue would probably have been placed in a temple or place of worship where it would have attracted the attention of devotees.
State of conservation: The sculpture is heavily eroded at the base. It has been restored and raised with pieces of wood to straighten the statue. Restoration at the flame level.
Evidence of cracking and splitting is visible. Patina dulled. This loss of shine is the result of wear, exposure to the elements and the natural aging of the material.
Provenance: ex Belgian collection
