An exceptional French collection for sale:
The original collection was put together by a French business couple from Bordeaux: Mrs Cheyssial and Mr Azzi, CEO of Prix Import, a company specialising in mass distribution that he founded in Gabon in 1992 and which has continued to grow to become the largest supermarket chain in Gabon, associated with the Carrefour group.
Quickly sensitive to the qualities of African arts, Madame and Monsieur Cheyssial-Azzi put together this remarkable ensemble showing great diversity.
Indeed, the objects are varied from a formal and ethnic point of view.
Thus, large and small masks, statues, containers, dolls, fetishes, bronzes, musical instruments, everyday objects and even dance costumes made of plant fibers as well as a rare subset of Cameroonian pipes are mixed together. A real little private museum all in all.
This diversity is also evident in terms of provenance: the geographical area represented is very extensive, since we find objects whose origins stretch from West Africa to Angola, passing through Gabon, the heart of the Congo, the Ivory Coast and many others.
The couple of meticulous collectors have also carried out a colossal amount of work in documenting the majority of the objects collected: imposing binders contain photographs, maps, letters, information, bibliographies, comparative studies of forms and markets, exchanges with the Darmancier study in Bourges, etc., leaving a trace that will stand the test of time, and a gold mine for enthusiasts who will acquire these objects through auctions.
The collection was finally passed on more than a decade ago to a doctor from the Bordeaux region who completed it according to his own sensibilities, making this collection a rich postcard of all that African art can offer in terms of forms.
