"Ignis, the major Italian producer of washing machines, refrigerators and other consumer durables, was founded in 1944, towards the end of World War ll, and this book, in the tradition of many company photobooks, celebrates the firm's twenty-fifth anniversary. In this respect it conforms to a typical company book model, carefully detailing the Ignis history, its products and the firm's development, with its headquarters in Varese and factories in Naples and Siena - a medium-sized, eminently successful business employing some 12,000 people. The book, however, is distinguished by the quality of its photography, which was not done by an Eggleston or a Friedlander, but primarily by a commercial com-
pany called Publifoto. The highly detailed photographs, reproduced in vibrant colour, a double-page spread to each picture, are large format with all verticals corrected, shot in the straightforward, objective mode demanded by such record photography. In a recent book, Record Pictures, Michael Collins has argued that this kind of highly formal, sober photography, where the myriad facts recorded are more important than the photographer's opinion, has been largely superseded by the more informal approach made possible by smaller cameras and now, digital photography. If, as he argues, there was a 'golden age' of record photography, lasting for about a hundred years from around 1850 to 1960, the Ignis book comes around the end of it. But it is a distinguished example, firmly within the tradition (although
in colour), and handsomely designed and presented."
