Tom Hopman

Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960, Gregory Colbert began his career in Paris in 1983 where he began making documentary films on social issues. Filmmaking led to fine arts photography. His first exhibition, Timewaves, opened in 1992 at the Museum of Elysée in Switzerland and the Parco Galleries in Japan.

In 1992 he then embarked on his lifelong project Ashes and Snow. He has launched more than thirty expeditions to such places as India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tonga, Namibia, and Antarctica to film and photograph wondrous interactions between human beings and animals. Elephants, sperm whales, manatees, sacred ibis, antigone cranes, royal eagles, gyr falcons, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs, caracals, leopards, baboons, elands, and meerkats are among the animals he has photographed. Human subjects include Burmese monks, trance dancers, San people, and Colbert himself free diving with sperm whales.

In 2002, Colbert presented the culmination of this singular work, Ashes and Snow, at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy, a 13th-century 125,000-square-foot shipyard. Attended by more than 100,000 people, it was the largest solo exhibition ever mounted in Venice. The show contained 130 images up to 10 feet in length on sheets of hand-made Japanese paper and a one-hour film. 

The photographs capture extraordinary moments of contact between man and animal. The result of profound patience and vision, the photographs have not been digitally collaged or superimposed; they record what the artist himself saw through the lens.

The title Ashes and Snow refers to the literary component of the exhibition—a fictional account of a man who, over the course of a year-long journey, composes 365 letters to his wife. The source of the title is revealed in the 365th letter.

The exhibition started its migration around the world in the Nomadic Museum, its traveling home. It debuted in New York in 2005 and then migrated to Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Mexico City. It has welcomed more than ten million visitors to date, making it the most attended exhibition by any living artist in history.

Every exhibition is accompanied by a dedicated catalog that downselects from an extending and growing collection of works. The Tokyo exhibition catalog that is offered is the largest catalog that has been issued (240 pages vs 220 for the New York catalog and 148 for the Mexico catalog). It inlcudes 30 % of new images when compared to the New York exhibition catalog.

The books were printed and bound in Italy; the covers are created out of handmade paper from Nepal which is sealed with natural beeswax; interior pages are printed on handmade Italian paper; each book is hand sewn and tied with thread stained with hibiscus tea leaves.
