Alberto Korda - Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemingway, Havana, 1960

The photo of the guerrilla leader and the writer hung for years in Fidel Castro's office in the Palacio de la Revolución. It still hangs in the foyer of the Hilton Hotel, or Hotel Havana Libre as it was called after the takeover in 1959, when Fidel took up residence there.

It is one of two existing photos that capture the same image from different angles: a smiling Fidel Castro together with a laughing Ernest Hemingway. Two men who appear to be having a great time, enjoying each other's company. Hemingway and Fidel are great friends, the photo says, and that idea lives on unabated more than half a century later.

Some sources say that Hemingway was particularly eager to meet with Fidel to ask him not to confiscate his house, a fate that was beginning to befall many foreign properties in Cuba.
The photo, which would subsequently take on a life of its own, had nothing to do with an actual friendship, but was simply the result of a shared interest between the two subjects.
