Robert Garnier - Les tragedies: Les Juives. Cornélie, Marc-Antoine ... - 1599

Robert Garnier - Les tragedies: Les Juives. Cornélie, Marc-Antoine ... - 1599

Beautiful edition printed in Rouen, on the same date as the Parisian edition at l'Angelier, in 12mo format. Elegantly printed in a small italic body.
Beautiful Jansenist binding in coral morocco, ribbed spine underlined with blind-stamped fillets, frames with fine blind-stamped fillets, title and edges in gilt.

Contains: Porcie, Cornélie, Marc Antoine, Hippolyte, La Troade, Antigone, Les Juives, Bradamante. They are each preceded by numerous poetic tributes to Robert Garnier including Ronsard, Baïf, R. Estienne etc.

As much as a playwright, Robert Garnier (circa 1545-1590) wanted to be a lyric poet, orator and moralist. His tragedies are haunted by major questions, political (the best form of government, the reconciliation of order and justice, the rights of kings and the value of reason of state), metaphysical (the existence of evil, the reign of injustice, the belief in a just God) and moral (the influence of stoicism, noticeable in Roman tragedies, which exalts man's mastery over his destiny and legitimizes suicide, gives way to a Christian attitude of submission in the face of trials imposed by God). From his first play, he was hailed by the leading writers of the time as the restorer of tragedy, eclipsing Jodelle. This admiration accompanied his career and Garnier remains the only tragic author of the Renaissance remembered by literary history. Esteemed by Charles IX and Henri III, linked to Ronsard, and finally famous for his speeches to kings, Robert Garnier died in Le Mans in 1590.
