This remarkable Showa-era set includes three distinctive caramic tea caddies (chaire), each paired with an elegant silk pouch. These caddies represent a rich tradition of Japanese tea ceremony craftsmanship and artistic expression, making them both functional and collectible treasures.
The first tea caddy, the smallest in height, is an Naikai style chaire crafted by the second-generation Bandai Sōzan (Bandai Seiji). Bandai Sōzan tragically passed away early, with his legacy continued by Bandai Kimiko. This caddy bears the Sōzan 草山 mark and comes with a matching silk pouch.
The second tea caddy, medium in height, is an aubergine-shaped (nasu-gata) chaire created by renowned ceramic artist Kageyama Akishi. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1950, Kageyama Akishi graduated from the Crafts Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1975 and completed his master’s degree in ceramics in 1977. He honed his skills under Nōdō Fujimoto, a designated Living National Treasure for polychrome porcelain. In 1984, he established his kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture and became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association, receiving numerous awards throughout his career. This caddy bears the mark Kageyama 景山and paired with a keitou-mon (cockscomb motif) silk pouch.
The third tea caddy, the tallest in the set, is a Bunrin style chaire of Chinese inspiration (karamono), featuring a signature by the artist with the character “永” (ei). It is accompanied by a finely crafted silk pouch that enhances its refined appearance.
All three tea caddies are in good condition, with minor signs of use, such as slight scuffs and light stains, consistent with their age. Please review the photos to assess the detailed condition.
