The Photo Image 10
Toshihiro Asakura
Photo Critics/1971/Japanese/220*250*10
This is the 10th (and final) issue of the quarterly photography magazine “Shashin-Image” published by Shashin Hyoronsha, led by Shinya Yoshimura, a photography critic and publisher. Yoshimura was a legendary photography critic and editor who passed away in 1978 at the age of 44. He and Eikoh Hosoe were high school classmates, and in their junior year Yoshimura was the head of the photography club and Hosoe was a member. In the late 1960s, he established his own publishing company and published a number of photography books, including Daido Moriyama's “Shashin yo sayonara (Good-bye to Photography),” as well as a quarterly photography magazine, “Shashin Eigaku (Photographic Image Quarterly),” and other publications. He was a respected figure among photographers such as Hosoe and Moriyama. In the 1980s, Etsuro Ishihara of Zeit-Foto established Japan's first photography museum, and it is said that Yoshimura even prepared the prospectus for the establishment of the “Museum of Contemporary Photography” in the 1970s. This final issue of the magazine features Toshihiro Asakura, a photographer known for such works as the photo collection “Gen-no Gyo” (1979) by Akaji Maro.
