Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility
Published by Frederick A. Stokes Co. New York
1890
First edition thus, presumed first printing. Cream white half leather spine over waxed red cloth. Gilt lettering and gilt decoration to spine. Gilt stamped decoration to fore edge of upper board. Top edges gilt. From the private library of Adrian Eeles (art historian and art dealer). Ex Libris Adrian Eeles’ bookplate to front pastedown.
Sense & Sensibility was Jane Austen’s first published novel. It is the story of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, as they come of age. After the death of their father, they are forced to leave their family estate and to move, with their mother and younger sister, to a cottage in rural Devonshire. The story charts their experiences in love, loss and a growing understanding of the world, themselves and each other, playing in particular on the internal conflicts between the qualities of sense and sensibility that each sister displays.
Condition: Signs of shelf wear and use, foxing in content and 4 pages with small tears on lower page as showed in the photographs but overall good.
