Trademark under the base; this rare "Karl Ens" mark was used between the 1920s and 1940s

The sofa is designed and decorated in Bauhaus style

The thematic decipherment of the subject presents different interpretations in specialized catalogues
For some it is desperation of love
For others the girl is desperate after seeing her image
For others still, this porcelain was designed on the model of the sculpture "La Vérité Méconnue" by Aime-Jules Dalou and would suggest a symbolism linked to the Dreyfus affair which took place in France at the end of the 19th century: the figure lowering his head in shame represents France falsely imprisoning the young, talented and innocent Alfred Dreyfus
