An interesting tall 6-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) by Kobayashi Keisen 小林景仙 (active 20th century), showcasing a serene sansui’ga 山水画 (landscape painting) on shimmering golden silk. The composition illustrates an expansive waterscape illuminated by a full moon.
In the lower left corner, a tranquil fishing village nestles along the coast, surrounded by lush pine trees. Fishermen are strolling along the beach, or preparing their nets. Fisher boats dot the calm waters, illuminated all by the full moon that has just emerged from behind cloud banks.
Signed and sealed in the lower left corner: ‘Keisen’ 景仙.
Rendered in black ink 墨 (sumi) and subtle colour on golden silk, the painting is encased by a wide richly decorated brown-golden silk brocade border and framed in red lacquered wood, complete with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Total width: 369.2 cm. (2 x 62.8 cm and 4 x 60.9 cm); Height: 172.4 cm.
In a very good restored condition with traces of wear consistent with age, including a few small restorations in the painting. The backside with paper restorations. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
