Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), also known as Toyokuni III, was a great painter and printmaker during the Edo era (1600-1868).
The proposed work is part of the series “The Color Print Contest of a Modern Genji”, Chapter 2 Hahakigi (Ima Genji nishiki-e awase)
Woodblock print (nishiki-e), ink and color on paper, format 26,2 x 18,1 cm (10 5/16 x 7 1/8 in.), year 1853 (Kaei 6). Measures with frame: 40 cm x 30 cm. Work framed in a black frame with an elegant black passe-partout.
The work on sale was selected by the curators of the exhibition “Japan. Masters of the East” held at the National Gallery of Cosenza, Italy, in 2022. It bears the curators' statement and signatures on the back.
Excellent condition, cut margins.
