Here is a superb chalcopyrite specimen from the old finds in Cavnic mine, Romania, one of the best localities worldwide for the species!
It displays a cabinet size forest of clear quartz needles supporting a crescent-shaped corolla of extreme quality brassy gold colour chalcopyrite crystals (actually polycrystalline twins, up to 2 cm large) as well as more individualized groups!
The contrast between the perfect metallic lustre, colourful chalcopyrite and transparent quartz is what made this series of pockets from Cavnic so famous and a real standard for the species.
Notice also here an unusual feature: a thin sheet of white calcite, most probably a paperspath-type twin, ideally nested in the centre of the specimen.
You can also see some massive, recrystallized black sphalerite that forms the base of the quartz plate.
