The Japanese photographer Hara Yoshiichi's photo book Shukyoroku, published independently in 1982, is one of Hara's best-known works, and he has left behind many lyrical works full of Japanese sentiment and humanity through his portraits of strippers and geisha. Since 2000, she has energetically produced a series of emotional works that straddle dreams and reality, transforming her traditional style with works such as The Darkness of the Present, While There is Light and Everlasting Insects. This book is a collection of portraits (nudes) of women from various professions, including strippers and pink salon girls, avant-garde dancers, models, landladies and musicians, as well as avant-garde dancers, models and musicians, and contains the first photographs Hara took with a 4×5-inch camera she borrowed from a friend, having previously shot on 35mm film. At the end of the book, Hara says: ‘I wanted actual, genuine bodies. I thought that the only way to erase from my mind the volume of breasts and the nostalgia for the female genitals was to draw each of the ladies towards me and photograph them.’ Book design by Kohei Sugiura + Kazushi Suzuki.
