Autel ASEN FON  (Togo, Bénin)

En fer noir.

L'Asen est consacré et installé dans la case des ancêtres lors des cérémonies qui
marquent la levée de deuil. Le défunt réside dans cet autel où on lui offre "à boire": alcool
et libations.

L'art dahoméen possède une très grande originalité, celle d'avoir transmis sous forme
d'idéogrammes et de rébus l'histoire et les traditions du peuple Fon.
Les figures sur les asen sont censées référer à la personne que l'on souhaite
commémorer. Ils sont en général une représentation directe de la profession du défunt ou
de son appartenance religieuse. L'asen est décoré de symboles propres à chaque défunt.
C'est pourquoi les Fon eux-mêmes disent que les seules personnes capables de
comprendre totalement ces symboles sont celle qui a fait l'asen ou celle qui l'a
commandité.
