Figure, Zigua people, Tanzania Wood Height with stand 31 cm The Zigua of Tanzania are a people occupying an intermediate zone on the north coast of the Indian Ocean, neighbors of the Kwere. Close to a fertile region, they were early initiators of important trade to the interior of Tanzania. Little is known about their statuary. This intriguing statuette has a style that could be described as expressionist. It is uniformly coated with a libatory patina. The eyes are represented by two tiny glass beads. The small cavity on the head was probably used to store relics. It is mounted on a custom display metal stand.
