Natsume 棗 (tea caddy) - Lacquer - Nawate Masaharu 縄手昌晴 (1954) - Japan - Late 20th century (Late Shôwa period/Heisei period)

A remarkable Wajima lacquer 輪島塗natsume 棗 (tea caddy) by Nawate Masaharu 縄手昌晴 (1954), of typical form with a flush-fitting cover, adorned with a design called ‘rough waves’, showing roaring waves enveloping the entire exterior. Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer ground 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi) and finished with golden fundame rims 粉溜地 (matt lacquer). The interior and underside are coated with charming oxidized silver lacquer. Complete with original signed and sealed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box). Signed and sealed ‘Shôhô’ 正抱. Nawate Masaharu (Shōhō) 縄手昌晴 (正抱) was born on January 25, 1954 (Shōwa 29). After completing his education at Wajima High School in March 1972, he began his journey into the world of lacquer art. That same year, he entered an apprenticeship under the esteemed maki-e master Kitaseiemon 北清右エ門. Following three years of dedicated training, he completed his apprenticeship in 1975 and continued to refine his craft by enrolling in the Maki-e Department of the Prefectural Lacquerware Technical Training Institute. Upon graduating in 1978, Nawate began showcasing his exceptional artistry at city art exhibitions, where his works were consistently recognised with awards.
