This carravagesk painting is attributed to the circle of the Venetian late baroque painter Antonio Zanchi ( 1631-1722) . It depicts the famous Old Testament story of David holding the head of Goliath. ( 1 Samuel, Chapter 17, verse 50-53 )
David killed the Phillistine giant Goliath with a rock and a sling and after that decapitated him with his own sword. This work is executed with great skill. The chiaroscuro effects, that are the most obvious characteristics of Zanchi's work, are masterly rendered in this work. The work shows movement and great emotion of the relieved teenager David, who has made the day for the Israeli armies by killing it's invincible figure head Goliath. Zanchi was a celebrated Venetian artist. He painted works of art for numerous Venetian churches. The canvas is glued on a board ( marouflé) and placed in a 19th century frame. Excluding frame 88 x 69 cm. Including frame 116 x 88 cm. Provenance private collection in Johannesburg, South Africa.
