Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base) - Granite - Japan - Taishō period (1912-1926)

An amazing large 5-part carved granite garden lantern, known as a Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base). This traditional Japanese lantern is set close to the ground. The term 'Yukimi' translates to 'snow viewing,' a fitting name as the lantern's Kasa 傘 (umbrella) gathers snow during winter, creating a picturesque scene. Each segment of the lantern represents one of the elements: • The bottom-most sao 竿 (post), which touches the ground, symbolizes chi 地 (earth). • The chûdai 中台 (central platform) above it represents sui 水 (water). • The hibukuro 火袋 (fire box), which encases the flame or light, represents ka 火 (fire). • The upper sections embody fû 風 (air) and kû 空 (void or spirit), reaching towards the sky. The lantern features an elegant top with an elongated sleek point, while the hibukuro is adorned with a reticulated shippô (seven treasures) design on its panels, and one with a crescent moon. The band along the chûdai is embellished with a relief design of stylized waves. Approx. dimensions: Height 93.5 cm, Width 79.5 cm, Depth 64.5 cm. Dating these lanterns can be challenging, but we believe this one is from the Taishô period (1912-1926). It boasts an outdoorsy patina from years spent outside and remains in very good condition, with a small chip on one corner of the kasa and foot. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and high-quality packing for safe transport. When shipped, we will also add a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
