Tirés des Oeuvres complètes, ces Contes moraux sont complets en 4 tomes.

Historiographe de France en 1772, Académicien puis Secrétaire Perpétuel de l'Académie Française en 1783, Marmontel est au sommet de sa notoriété lorsqu'il publie ses oeuvres complètes en 1787. Ecrivain prolifique, c'est surtout dans ses « Contes » que Marmontel a montré un vrai talent ; il les publiait dans le « Mercure » dont ils n'étaient pas le moindre ornement.

Quelques titres : L'heureux divorce, La femme comme il y en a peu, La côte des deux amants, Les promenades de Platon en Sicile, La mauvaise mère, Le scrupule, ou l'amour mécontent de lui-même, etc.

À Paris, chez Verdière, 1818. 14 x 23 cm, 1 : 441 pp ; 2 : 437 pp ; 3 : 353 pp, 4 : 401 pp. Reliure cartonnage marbré, dos lisse orné avec pièce de titre et tomaison dorés. Reliures frottées, coins émoussés, dos insolés. Tache d'eau en grande partie hors texte sur les tomes 1 et 2. Rousseurs éparses, peu présentes.
