Sandōri, containing a high amount of tin, produces a rich, clear tone with a long, calming resonance that includes a unique wavering effect, evoking peace and serenity. Due to its brittle nature, crafting this alloy requires advanced casting techniques, making sandōri products rare and highly sought after. This bell is said to improve its tone with use, becoming even more treasured over time. The surface of the bell is adorned with a beautifully carved lotus motif, a symbol of purity, spiritual awakening, and the triumph of the soul over worldly obstacles. The lotus blooms even in muddy water, signifying enlightenment and resilience. The base of the orin is marked with the name of the renowned artisan, Sano Kosai, ensuring its authenticity and craftsmanship. Born in 1944 in Takaoka, Sano Kosai is celebrated as one of Japan's most distinguished metal artisans. He achieved numerous accolades throughout his career, including his first selection for the 15th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1968 and thirteen subsequent recognitions. In 1983, he had the honor of demonstrating his craftsmanship before the Emperor and Empress (then Crown Prince and Princess), further solidifying his legacy. This exceptional bell comes with a luxurious gold brocade cushion and a high-quality orin striker with a leather grip (which has been reinforced with tape). The set is housed in its original paulownia wood box, which bears the artisan’s name and seal, providing both elegance and protection for this heirloom-quality piece. Apart from the reinforcement on the striker, the condition of the orin and accessories is excellent. Please refer to the photos for further details.
