A student of Kunichika Toyohara, Chikashige’s style is close to that of his teacher. In addition to nishiki-e (full color prints), Chikashige produced illustrations for books, newspapers, and advertisements. A contemporary of his teacher Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900), from whom he took the first character 周 (chika) for his main art name (gō) Chikashige.
