Finely carved, patinated Swordfish Rostrum - Dragon Phoenix motif - Rostrum - Xiphias Gladius - 13 cm - 80 cm - 6 cm- Non-CITES species

A very impressive eye-catcher on which a Balinese master craftsman has intricately carved a dragon and phoenix. The craftsman's family has been carving for generations, as this skill is traditionally passed down from father to son.

This could be seen as a type of scrimshaw. Scrimshaw is the name given to engravings, and carvings are done in bone or ivory.

At the heart of Chinese mythology are four spiritual creatures (in Chinese - Sì Shòu, in Japanese - Shishin). Two of the most powerful of the four celestial animals are the dragon and phoenix.
