Le masque hippopotame est le plus important des chefferies bamileke, et son apparition est rare. Ce masque est nommé "Batcham" car le premier masque de ce type a été trouvé dans la chefferie de Batcham, qui veut dire "hospitalier"
", car on s'y réfugiait pendant les
guerres.
Appartenant à la société msop qui intervenait lors du sacre du fo (roi), ce masque tsesah ou tsemabu représente une tête mi-animale (hippopotame), mi-humaine.
Les chefs exhibaient les masques hippopotame lors des cérémonies funéraires, judiciaires, et lors de la désignation du successeur.
