Shimizu Seikan is considered one of the master potters of the early Meiji period. He traveled between Kanazawa, Yokohama, and Kobe, and devoted himself to the export of Kutani ware. He opened a Kutaniyaki store in Kanazawa and gained fame for his exquisite quality products. His works were made of gold brocade, and he was good at detailed painting.
馬上杯 Bajohai is a type of cup with a high base, which is held and drunk from. It is so named because of its shape suitable for drinking on horseback, and because the vessel's waist is high, giving the impression of being on horseback.
九谷焼 Kutani ware
Kutani ware is colored porcelain produced in the cities of Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga, and Nomi in southern Ishikawa Prefecture. Kutani ware is characterized by its vividly colored overglaze enamels called Gosai-te (commonly known as "Kutani Gosai").
