This is a sculpture of Ganesha, a beloved Hindu god who is believed to bring good fortune and success in all daily activities. In India, people who visit temples often pray to Ganesha before they worship the main temple god or goddess. Ganesha is easy to recognize because he has an elephant’s head, a round belly, several arms, and is often depicted as having something sweet to eat. Although he is often shown sitting or standing, here he is dancing, which shows his joyful side. In some parts of India he has an adult’s body, in other parts, a child’s body.

This Ganesha comes from the Eastern part of Java, Indonesia. The Hindu religion formerly reigned over Java, and today only remnants remain. However, you can tell the Hindu religion has been engrained deeply into the culture as in some villages, especially in the Eastern part of Java, craftsman still make beautiful Hindu sculptures.

A deadly apex predator, Saber Tooth Tigers once ruled over our early ancestors with their razor-sharp fangs that could reach over 20 centimeters in length. Even as a skeleton, nearly 12,000 years after its extinction, this beast cuts a chilling figure, its jaw still poised wide open as though ready to attack.
