After famous painting by Tiziano (self portrait) - the Venetian painter, dated c. 1546–47. While he painted a number of independent self-portraits in various formats, only two painted examples to survive. One is in the museum in Berlin, second in Madrid. Both share a somber and reserved pallet, although this example is richer in tonal variation and colour harmonisation. [wikipedia]

Tiziano Vecelli ( 1488/90–1576), a ITALIAN painter during the Renaissance, considered the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. Recognized by his contemporaries as "The Sun Amidst Small Stars" (recalling the final line of Dante's Paradiso), Titian was one of the most versatile of Italian painters, equally adept with portraits, landscape backgrounds, and mythological and religious subjects. His painting methods, particularly in the application and use of colour, exercised a profound influence not only on painters of the late Italian Renaissance, but on future generations of Western art.

Print made by Antoine Louis Romanet (1748-1807)

This engraving was made appr. 1786 in Paris a few years before the French revolution. High standard works entitled Galerie du Palais Royal were ordered by the King Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723) to show the wealth of his art collection. All of them were done by the best engravers from different countries.
