Published in 1890-1917 in St. Petersburg four times a year.
Published materials on the ethnography and folklore of the peoples of the Russian Empire and Slavic countries. Attention was also paid to the study of the economic life of peoples.
The permanent sections of the journal included: 1. Research, observations, reasoning; 2. Small materials with notes: monuments of language and folk literature, Russian and foreign; 3. Criticism and bibliography, reviews of ethnographic literature: Russian and foreign; 4. Questions and answers - scholarly correspondence; 5. Mixture, Private notes, Scholarly news, Activities of learned societies in Russia and abroad.
In addition to research articles, Zhivaya Starina published reports and descriptions of ethnographic expeditions and programs for collecting ethnographic materials[2].
Scientists such as F. D. Batyushkov, A. N. Veselovsky, N. I. Veselovsky, K. Ya. Grot, V. A. Zhukovsky, F. M. Istomin, N. Ya. Marr, L. N. Maykov, S. F. Oldenburg, A. N. Pypin, A. I. Sobolevsky, D. A. Khvolson, A. A. Shakhmatov and others took an active part in the publication .[2]
The magazine brought together major scientists and played a significant role in the development of Russian ethnography.
