While Peter Mayhew was working as a nurse, an article published in a local newspaper allowed him to be spotted by the producers of the film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, who would give him the role of a minotaur. He would later be hired by George Lucas for the role of Chewbacca, a big hairy Wookiee, Han Solo's companion in Star Wars, which made him world famous.
When he talks about how he got the role of Chewbacca in Star Wars, this 2.21 meter giant (due to Marfan syndrome, from which he suffers2) explains that at the time of casting, when George Lucas entered the room where he was, he stood up, in accordance with British politeness, thus towering over the director by more than 50 centimeters (George Lucas is 1.68 m), who then reportedly said: "I think we found him."
More than twenty years after Return of the Jedi, George Lucas called on him again in 2005, to reprise the role of Chewbacca in Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
He reprised the role of the Wookiee again in 2015 in the seventh Star Wars opus: Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens3 but, suffering from knee problems since his operation in 2013, shares it with Joonas Suotamo.
