One of his greatest commissioned works was the decoration of a hall in the Palais Todesco in Vienna. On behalf of the banker Eduard von Todesco, Gaul created a ceiling painting in tempera with the train of Bacchus and scenes from the myth of Cupid, Psyche and Venus. In his genre pieces there is a turn to French models, which he developed in the colors. His portraits contain many important personalities from the Vienna Burgtheater.
