Due to custom regulations we can not ship outside the E.U. Please make sure you have an EU shipping address before bidding.
Ancient Egyptian bronze cast statuette of a jackal in standing position.
The figure is standing on a bronze rectangular base and has an integral suspension loop on its back. The jackal god has an alert expression with pointed ears, a slender body with muscular legs and a long bushy tail.
In fact this amulet represents Wepwawet, the openers of ways.
Wepwawet, whose name translates to “Opener of the Ways,” is a fascinating and significant deity in the pantheon of ancient Egyptian gods. Often depicted as a jackal or a wolf, Wepwawet is associated with pathways, guidance, and the ability to overcome obstacles. His role transcends the physical; he was thought to open roads not just in life but also in the afterlife, ensuring safe passage for the deceased through the treacherous landscape of the Duat (the Egyptian underworld).
Wepwawet represents the timeless human need for guidance in uncharted territory—be it physical journeys, spiritual quests, or the uncertainties of life and death. His presence assured the ancient Egyptians that no matter how perilous the path, there was always a way forward.
Representations of the Anubis jackal and more so of Wepwawet in bronze are extremely rare.
In Ancient Egypt the Anubis Jackal had a protective power, The Ancient Egyptian believed the Anubis protected the dead from any aggressor.
This is described in spell 151 of the Book of the Dead ( in the tomb chamber, a magic brick with an amulet of Anubis jackal representing the god should be placed on the west wall, facing east to the mummy of the deceased.)
In some versions of ancient Egyptian religious beliefs Anubis assisted in the mummification and rebirth of the god Osiris. This responsibility for mummification and eventual rebirth is the same role Anubis fulfils for the human dead.
Bronze figure: ± 49,5 x 50 mm
Wooden base: ± 56 x 53,4 x 23,8 mm
Condition: Good and solid condition, base incomplete. The jackal has a fantastic dark olive-brown patina with spots of cuprite-and malachite. The figure is fixed on a wooden display stand.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
