Lyon, Etienne Gueynard and Nicolaus Wolfius, 1498, 14 December (Colophon: Impressum est hoc op[us] pro fido et bono bibliopola Stephano Gaynardo civi lugdunensi: arte et industria Nicolai Wolf ... ipso Asce[n]sio vitio[rum] expu[n]ctore).
§ 4to (226 x1 60); [6], 198 leaves, title page printed in red and black ,fascinating large woodcut depicting the author between Antonio Mancinelli and Josse Badius (1462-1535), woodcut initials, printer’ mark in red on last page of index, printed notes on blank margins, 54 lines to a page text in semi- types surround by commentary, late XVII century brown calf, double gilt fillet on covers, gilt spine with title-piece, Engraved ex-libris C. Hettier with the motto “Ad Eventum Festina” on pastedown, five leaves with brown stains at the internal blank margin ( see pictures), fine and well preserved copy on crisp paper, COMPLETE under all respects.
FIRST EDITION OF JUVENAL WORKS WITH THE COMMENTARY OF THE FAMOUS HUMANIST JOSSE BADE. The humanist pedagogue, grammarian, and rhetorician Antonio Mancinelli (1452-1505) taught in Venice, Rome, and Orvieto; he produced editions of Cicero, Herodotus, Horace, Juvenal, Svetonius, Virgil, and many other authors. “Badius’s letter to Henri Valuphin is dated one day later than the colophon, indicating that the preliminaries were composed after the body of the book. The colophon shows that Badius acted as his own press-corrector (vitiorum expunctore). He frequently acted in this capacity in Lyon, before moving to Paris in 1499 where he eventually established his own press. The title page is printed in red and black. The magister cum discipulis woodcut is found again in a Persius of 1499 (Morgan 46)” (Shaw).

Non legge attentamente le descrizioni, prima definisce il libro splendido.. poi dopo tre giorni pretende, senza alcun valido motivo, di restituire il volume, Tratta i libri d'antiquariato come se fossero prodotti seriali, misurandone al millimetro le dimensioni e senza rendersi minimamente conto di ciò che ha in mano. Auguri a tutti i venditori che lo troveranno sulla loro strada. Evitatelo, se potete!
