Very rare half-savonette (half-hunter) pocket watch with gold plated case (diameter 50 mm) in very good condition, DENNISON case with a WALTHAM movement, England (Birmingham) around 1925.

Half-savonette watches are generally rare and rarely appear in auctions. The present lot impresses with its overall beautiful condition.

Gold plated case signed A.L.D (Aaron Lufkin Dennison, The Dennison Watch Company, Birmingham) on the inside of the back lid. Stamp on the inside of the dust cover: “English make. Guaranteed to be made of two plates of 14 ct Gold with a plate of composition between and to wear 25 years”. Case fully functional and in great condition, please compare with the pictures. Beautiful and immaculate unsigned enamel dial with large Roman numerals. No cracks, only a small chip at 10 o'clock and one barely visible and short hairline crack at 7 o'clock. Original hands, Crystal without scratches.

Decorated movement with lever escapement and a high-grade compensating bi-metallic screw balance. Movement signed “American Waltham, U.S.A.”. If wound, the movement runs well, however the service history is unknown. The movement runs with good accuracy, with a positive deviation of less than 2 minutes per day and a power reserve of more than 40 hours (!).

About the jewel on fourth wheel (seconds wheel): The standard design of Waltham movements of this type does not include jewel bearings, except for the balance wheel. In this "upgraded" version, however, an additional jewel bearing has been added at the fourth wheel. All other bearings are still made of metal, which is clearly visible in the bearing design (see photos). Thus, it is not the case that jewel bearings are missing here; the bearings of the movement are all in their original condition. The good rate accuracy of the watch supports this.
