View translationAncient Roman Green Glass Unguentarium
No. 90351461
A delicate ancient Roman glass unguentarium, blown from translucent glass that now displays a deep green tint. The vessel features a globular body that flows into a long cylindrical neck with an everted, folded rim. The base is flattened. The colour deepens towards the base, enriched with dark and turquoise flecks, and becomes paler and more translucent towards the neck. The rim features some partially preserved white pigment, and beneath the outer glass layer the neck is coated with a silvery-turquoise sheen. Earthy encrustations and some wear feature on the surface. A crack at the top of the neck.
Unguentaria were amongst the most common objects of Roman blown glass: produced in large numbers, they were items of every day use for keeping expensive unguents and cosmetic oils. By the 1st century AD, the technique of glass-blowing had revolutionised the art of glass-making, allowing for the production of small medicine, incense, and perfume containers in new forms. The small body and mouth allowed the user carefully to pour and control the amount of liquid dispensed, and glass was the material of choice for storing the oils because it was not porous.
Measurements: H 7.8cm x W 2.3cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
