This is a lovely set of Vintage Kokeshi by the famous Miyajima Muhitsu. The dolls are titled 'Hanagokoro - Flower Heart' and are a well known design. They could be seen as a mother and child pair.
Height: 14,5 cm and 20 cm
Miyajima Muhitsu was born in 1929 and it is believed he began making Kokeshi in 1942. He was originally a traditional style kokeshi maker and switched in the 1940s to the creative style. He won many awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award in 1973.
Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children. Later they became popular souvenirs and real decorative items, for some even collector items.
