According to Michael Bond, the idea for the character Paddington came to him when he noticed and then bought a solitary teddy bear on the shelves of a London shop one Christmas Eve in 1956 as a gift for his wife.
The bear's refugee status, in turn, was inspired by the sight of Jewish refugee children arriving in England during World War II, as well as London children evacuated to the British countryside to escape German bombing, wearing similar signs to the one found around Paddington's neck.
"They all had a label round their neck with their names and addresses, and a small suitcase or piece of luggage containing their most valuable possessions. So Paddington, in a sense, was a refugee, and I think there is no sadder spectacle than that of a refugee."
