Fantastic gusoku armor with all its elements and original antique box. FFantastic early Edo period armour with a very unusual design. The armour is matched in its elements with an unusual homogeneous finish. Kawari-nuri refers to many kinds of lacquering techniques which are used to make interesting patterned or textured finishes. It was a very popular technique used historically on armour and sword sheaths as it gave them a harder finish and made them more resistant to scuffing and scratching. This piece has most of the elements with this rare finish, plus the colours are striking and the finely crafted Wakidate wood antlers are mounted on the zunari kabuto. The red and gold tones used to be the most expensive and least frequent on armour. It is a very rare and personal armour, designed to order by some high level samurai who could afford it.
